The Lynwood Unified Nutrition Services Department recently hosted its first-ever Elementary Food Vendor Fest at Marshall Elementary, giving nearly 250 elementary school students and parents the opportunity to taste-test potential food items for the cafeteria menu and give feedback on what they’d like to see next year.
Similar to previous Food Tasting events, guests received an emoji survey to complete while sampling a variety of items from different vendors in a farmer’s market-style setting, as well as a student farmer’s market, highlighting the District’s commitment to bringing more farm-to-table options to students’ plates.
“We want students to feel as though they can enjoy a home-cooked meal, even at school,” said Francisco Magana, the District’s new Chef Supervisor. Under the leadership of Nutrition Services Director Vanessa Jones, Magana is charged with carrying out the Department’s vision of reducing processed, packaged foods and providing fresh school cafeteria food options that enhance creativity and flavor.
Many families in attendance echoed this sentiment, praising the fun and healthy menu, which featured everything from breakfast items like French toast English muffins to vegan lunch options such as plant-based burgers and sandwiches.
“Students need good brain food to do well in school,” said Mercedes Carrasco, a proud parent of students at Rosa Parks Elementary, Hosler Middle School and Lynwood High School. “The chicken sandwich was spicy, but kids love spice. I’m sure they’ll love it!”
For Iker Juarez, president of the sixth-grade class at Wilson Elementary School, the Apple Cinnamon Texas Toast took the grand prize in taste.
“This was a great way to boost students’ morale,” he said.
Events like the Food Vendor Fest ensure that student voices are heard while keeping health and wellness at the forefront. Nutrition Services has showcased its menu offerings during Back-to-School Nights, regularly holds menu committee meetings, and introduces students each month to organic fruits and vegetables sourced directly from the local farm partnered with the District. The next virtual Parent School Menu Committee meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on May 21. Follow The Lynwood Cafe on Instagram for more information.
