Lynwood Unified Students Immerse in Debbie Allen’s “Hot Chocolate Nutcracker”

Over 100 Lynwood Unified elementary school students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Debbie Allen’s “The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker,” a magical reimagining of the classic ballet designed to not only entertain but celebrate cultural diversity, excellence and representation.

Students in grades 4 through 6 traveled to the Redondo Beach Performance Center on December 6, when they were transported into a world of magic and art, with ballerinas on pointe and fairy queens twirling from the sky as part of a cultural adaptation of E.T.A Hoffman's "The Nutcracker and The Mouse King.”

Organized by the District’s Equity, Access, and Instructional Services Department, the opportunity empowered students to take their learning outside of the classroom. Guiding students through the cultural odyssey was Emmy Award-winning actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, who demonstrated to students how creativity can transform literature into a captivating display of movement and art.

Events like “The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker” underscore the District’s commitment to providing students with enriching learning programs and cultural experiences in which they could see themselves represented – an essential step in fostering an inclusive educational environment that supports students’ overall development and long-term success.
