SEL & PBIS at Marshall

Supporting the Whole Child Through Positive Behavior and Emotional Growth

At Marshall Elementary, we are committed to nurturing the academic and social-emotional development of every student. Through a strong foundation in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), we create a school environment where all students feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

We believe that helping students grow socially and emotionally is just as important as academic instruction. Our SEL program equips students with essential life skills, such as:

  • Self-awareness and emotional regulation

  • Empathy and respect for others

  • Positive communication and relationship-building

  • Responsible decision-making

  • Resilience and coping strategies

Our dedicated Social-Emotional Learning Specialist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Community School Case Manager work together to provide individual and group support to meet the diverse emotional needs of our scholars. In the classroom, teachers guide students through daily SEL lessons and discussions that encourage self-reflection and foster a sense of belonging.

We also provide on-site support to promote emotional well-being for students and families through our Mental Health Collaborative.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is a proactive, school-wide system designed to promote a positive and safe learning environment. At Marshall, PBIS helps us establish clear expectations and consistent routines that improve behavior, support academic achievement, and build a strong school community.

PBIS Goals:

  • Improve school climate and safety

  • Increase academic achievement and student engagement

  • Reduce classroom disruptions and disciplinary referrals

PBIS in Action:

Marshall’s PBIS Site Team—composed of the principal, teachers, staff, and parents—began planning and implementation during the 2014–2015 school year. Together, we developed a strong foundation that includes:

  • A unified Statement of Behavioral Purpose

  • Clearly defined, school-wide behavioral expectations

  • Structured teaching of behavior expectations, just like academic subjects

  • Regular assemblies and classroom lessons on conflict resolution and making positive choices

  • Tiered intervention strategies to support students needing additional guidance

  • A meaningful reward system to reinforce positive behavior

Marshall is now a Gold award-winning PBIS school!

Marshall R.O.C.K.S. Behavior Expectations

We believe all students are R.O.C.K. Stars! Our school-wide behavior framework encourages students to be:

  • Responsible

  • Optimistic

  • Cooperative

  • Kind

  • Scholarly

These values guide daily interactions and help students understand the impact of their choices on themselves and others.

Student Recognition & Rewards

Positive behavior is celebrated across campus in a variety of ways, including:

  • Verbal praise from teachers and staff

  • PBIS Tickets for demonstrating R.O.C.K. behaviors

  • Classroom prizes and recognition

  • Invitations to special PBIS reward events and celebrations

At Marshall Elementary, SEL and PBIS go hand in hand in supporting the whole child. Together, these programs foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where students feel valued and inspired to grow—not just academically, but as kind, confident, and capable individuals.
